Vail Resorts sets 2026-27 opening dates for 11 ski resorts: What we know so far

Winter planning is officially underway for skiers and snowboarders across North America. Vail Resorts announced planned 2026-27 opening dates for 11 of its major ski resorts, spanning Colorado, California, Utah, Washington and British Columbia, giving travelers a clearer timeline for early-season trips. The schedule, announced Aug. 18, starts with Keystone Resort in Colorado, which is targeting an October opening, and runs through Dec. 4, with openings at Kirkwood in California and Stevens Pass in Washington. Every date remains dependent on weather, snow conditions, and operational readiness. Source: Shutterstock

Breckenridge is scheduled to follow on Nov. 6, while Vail Mountain is set for Nov. 13. Those dates give Colorado travelers two additional early-season options before the larger group of resorts begins opening around Thanksgiving. The next major wave arrives Nov. 20, when Whistler Blackcomb, Park City Mountain, Heavenly and Northstar are scheduled to open. Beaver Creek and Crested Butte follow Nov. 25, creating a concentrated stretch of openings across several popular destinations. Here are all 11 announced opening dates

The 2026-27 schedule covers a broad geographic range. Keystone is targeting an October opening, Breckenridge Nov. 6, Vail Mountain Nov. 13, and Whistler Blackcomb, Park City Mountain, Heavenly and Northstar Nov. 20. The Nov. 25 group includes Beaver Creek in Colorado and Crested Butte in Colorado. Kirkwood in California and Stevens Pass in Washington currently sit at the end of the announced schedule, with both targeting Dec.

4 openings. That means travelers looking for the earliest possible skiing have the best chance at Keystone, while people planning Thanksgiving trips have several choices. Those seeking a December start can look toward Kirkwood or Stevens Pass, provided conditions allow the resorts to open as scheduled. What the dates mean for trip planning

For travelers booking flights, lodging, or other winter arrangements, the announcement provides useful target dates but should not be treated as a guarantee. Vail Resorts specifically says opening dates are subject to change according to weather and conditions. That flexibility matters particularly early in the season, when snowfall and temperatures can determine how much terrain is ready. A resort can announce a target date well in advance, but actual lift operations depend on whether enough terrain can be safely prepared. Travelers should therefore build some flexibility into early-season plans, especially around Keystone’s October target. Checking the resort’s latest operating information shortly before traveling can help visitors avoid making plans around a date that later shifts. Vail Resorts is preparing for more than opening day

The company says it is continuing to invest heavily in snowmaking across its portfolio, with more than $100 million invested in snowmaking capabilities since 2015. The goal is to provide greater operational consistency when natural snowfall does not arrive on schedule. Source: NadaK2/Depositphotos

The 2026-27 season also brings changes to the guest experience. Vail Resorts recently announced Epic Ascent, a new private-lesson offering at Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek that adds concierge assistance, gear coordination, and skip-the-lift-line access. The company is also expanding connected Ski & Ride School features in its My Epic app to 14 resorts. Those locations include several of the mountains in the newly announced opening schedule, including Breckenridge, Keystone, Park City, Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood, and Stevens Pass. Passholders have a deadline to watch

The opening-date announcement also gives prospective visitors a useful deadline for access planning. Vail Resorts says Epic Pass and Epic Day Pass prices are scheduled to increase after Oct. 7, 2026, making the date particularly relevant for people who have already chosen their winter destinations. For travelers who do not want an unlimited season pass, Vail Resorts is promoting the Epic Day Pass as a flexible alternative. The company says a 4-Day Epic Day Pass covering destinations such as Vail, Whistler Blackcomb, Park City, and Breckenridge is currently offered at $471, or $118 per day. The company has also introduced reduced Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass pricing for skiers and riders ages 13-30. Vail Resorts says the new pricing provides a 20% discount compared with standard pricing, while eligible passholders can also receive discounts on selected mountain experiences. There is plenty to watch before the lifts turn

One interesting detail is Keystone’s attempt to open first in North America for the second consecutive year. Vail Resorts says the Colorado resort is again aiming for an October start, although its exact opening day depends on conditions rather than a fixed calendar date.

The company has also pointed to a possible strong El Niño pattern as one reason for optimism about the coming winter, while acknowledging that no one can predict exactly what weather conditions will bring. Vail says it is pairing that optimism with an aggressive snowmaking approach. For travelers, the practical takeaway is simpler: the calendar is taking shape, but the mountains still control the final call. A planned opening date is useful for choosing destinations and making reservations, while final operating decisions will come closer to each resort’s scheduled start. More resort dates and winter details are coming

The 11 resorts announced so far are not necessarily the complete Vail Resorts opening calendar for 2026-27. The company said additional resort opening dates would be announced in the coming months, meaning travelers should expect the broader schedule to become clearer as the season approaches. Vail Resorts is also preparing additional events and activations for the winter. The company has highlighted competitions, music programming, and other guest experiences at destinations including Breckenridge, Park City Mountain, and Vail Mountain, with more details expected during the preseason. For now, the announced dates give travelers a useful framework for the season: October at Keystone, November openings across Colorado and several major Western destinations, and Dec. 4 starts at Kirkwood and Stevens Pass. The final word, however, will come from snow and mountain conditions. TL;DR

Keystone: Targeting an October opening, with the exact date still dependent on conditions. Breckenridge and Vail: Scheduled for Nov. 6 and Nov. 13, respectively. Nov. 20: Whistler Blackcomb, Park City Mountain, Heavenly and Northstar are scheduled to open. Nov. 25: Beaver Creek and Crested Butte are scheduled to open, followed by Kirkwood and Stevens Pass on Dec. 4. All dates can change with weather and conditions, while Vail Resorts says Epic Pass and Epic Day Pass prices increase after Oct. 7. Read More From This Brand:
